Retirement calculator: how long until I can retire?

Enter a few numbers to see the year you could retire. It's free and needs no sign-up. Your numbers stay in your browser.

What this assumes

  • Everything is in today's money, so the return you enter is after inflation.
  • You could retire once your savings reach what your retirement spending needs, using a 4% yearly withdrawal, after any state pension.
  • If a state pension starts after you retire, enough is set aside to cover the years before it.
  • The money needs to last until age 95. The shaded range comes from 1,000 simulated markets with returns that swing about 15% a year.
  • Taxes and fees aren't included.

Questions

How long until I can retire?

It depends on what you've saved, what you add each month and what you'll spend in retirement. This calculator finds the first year your savings could cover that spending at a 4% yearly withdrawal, then shows the year and your age.

How does this retirement calculator work?

It grows your savings year by year at the return you enter, adds your monthly savings, and checks each year against the amount you'd need. The same calculation runs the full Retire Me Now planner.

How much do I need to retire?

A common rule of thumb is 25 times the yearly spending your pensions don't cover, which is the same as a 4% yearly withdrawal. For example, $36,000 a year with no pension comes to about $900,000.

What return should I use?

The default is 5% a year after inflation. Lower it to see a more cautious date. Above 10% after inflation is unusually optimistic.

Does it include tax?

No. Enter your spending as the amount you'd want after tax, and treat the result as a starting point.

Is this financial advice?

No. It's a projection from the numbers and assumptions you enter. Real returns and your circumstances will differ.
